What Are the Symptoms of Conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis, also known as Pink Eye, is a common eye condition in Children characterized by redness and inflammation of the Conjunctiva, the thin membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. Symptoms include redness in one or both eyes, itching or burning sensation, and increased tear production. Children with conjunctivitis may also experience discharge from the eyes, which can be clear, yellow, or green, leading to crusting around the eyes, especially after sleep.
Other symptoms include swollen eyelids, sensitivity to light, and a gritty feeling in the eyes. Conjunctivitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or irritants like smoke or chlorine in swimming pools. Viral conjunctivitis is usually associated with a cold or respiratory infection and often affects both eyes. Bacterial conjunctivitis typically affects one eye and may cause more significant discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis occurs with other allergy symptoms like sneezing and nasal congestion. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential to relieve symptoms and prevent spreading the infection.
