What Causes Flat Feet?

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet do not develop properly or collapse over time, causing the entire sole of the foot to make contact with the ground. Several factors can contribute to the development of flat feet. One of the most common causes is genetics—some individuals are born with flat feet or low arches, a condition that can run in families. In these cases, the tendons and ligaments in the foot may not provide adequate support, leading to the collapse of the arch. Flat feet can also result from muscle weakness, particularly in the posterior tibial tendon, which helps maintain the arch. If this tendon becomes weakened or overstretched, it can no longer support the arch, causing it to flatten.


Another common cause of flat feet is aging. As people age, the tendons and ligaments in the feet may lose flexibility and strength, increasing the risk of flat feet. Certain medical conditions can also contribute to the condition, such as arthritis, diabetes, and obesity, all of which can affect the structure and function of the feet. Pregnancy is another factor, as the increased weight and hormonal changes can lead to temporary flat feet. Trauma or injury to the foot, such as fractures or tendon damage, can also cause flat feet. For some, the condition may not cause any symptoms, but in others, it can lead to pain, swelling, or difficulty with walking and standing for extended periods.
