What Causes Fevers, Cold and Flu?
Fevers, Colds, and the Flu are all signs that your body is fighting off an infection. While they share some similar symptoms, they're caused by different culprits. Fevers are the body's natural response to an infection. When bacteria or viruses invade, your immune system kicks into high gear. It releases substances that raise your internal body temperature, creating an environment less hospitable for the invading germs. This increased temperature can help your body fight the infection more effectively.
Colds and the flu are both caused by viruses, but different strains. Colds are more common and generally milder than the flu. They're typically caused by a group of viruses called rhinoviruses. Symptoms like a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and cough are hallmarks of a cold. The flu, caused by influenza viruses, is a more serious respiratory illness. Flu symptoms often come on more abruptly and intensely, including fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue, and headache, in addition to respiratory issues.
