How Long Does Gastroenteritis Last?

Gastroenteritis, commonly known as the "stomach flu," is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines caused by a virus, bacteria, or a parasite. The duration of gastroenteritis depends on the cause. Generally, viral gastroenteritis lasts for one to three days, while bacterial gastroenteritis usually takes two to five days. If left untreated, it can last much longer.

Symptoms of gastroenteritis include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. In most cases, gastroenteritis will resolve on its own without medical treatment. It's important to seek medical attention if the symptoms persist after a few days, as there may be a more serious underlying condition. Additionally, it's important to stay hydrated and get plenty of rest while you're recovering.
