What Is World Immunization Week?

Observed annually in the Last Week of April, World Immunization Week is a reminder of the power of vaccines to protect everyone from preventable diseases. This year, we're highlighting the importance of staying up-to-date with key vaccines, including the flu (influenza) and Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis).

- Flu Vaccine:

  • Why it's important: Flu is a serious respiratory illness that can cause complications, especially for vulnerable groups.
  • Annual vaccination: Flu viruses change yearly, requiring a new annual vaccine to protect you and others.
  • Benefits: Yearly flu shots can prevent illness, reduce the severity if you get sick, and protect those at higher risk.
  • Recommendation: Annual flu vaccination is generally recommended for everyone 6 months and older.

- Tdap Vaccine:

  • What it protects against: Tdap protects against: Tetanus (lockjaw): Causes muscle stiffness and can be life-threatening.
  • Diphtheria: Can cause breathing issues, heart problems, paralysis, and death.
  • Pertussis (whooping cough): A contagious cough, dangerous for infants.
  • Importance across the lifespan: Adolescents and Adults: A single Tdap dose is recommended for those who missed it in childhood and for adults near infants.
  • Pregnant Individuals: Tdap is highly recommended during each pregnancy (27-36 weeks) to protect newborns from pertussis. Maternal antibodies provide early protection.
  • Boosters: A Td or Tdap booster is recommended every 10 years for ongoing tetanus and diphtheria protection.
