How Is Abdominal and Pelvic Pain Diagnosed?
Abdominal and Pelvic pain are diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. The healthcare provider will ask about the nature, location, and duration of the pain, as well as any associated symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, or changes in bowel or urinary habits. The physical examination may include palpation of the abdomen and pelvis to identify areas of tenderness, swelling, or masses.
Diagnostic tests used to evaluate abdominal and pelvic pain include blood tests, which can detect signs of infection, inflammation, or organ dysfunction; urine tests, which can identify urinary tract infections or kidney problems; and imaging studies such as ultrasound, X-rays, CT scans, or MRI, which provide detailed images of the internal organs and structures. In some cases, endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy, gastroscopy, or laparoscopy may be necessary to visualize the internal organs and obtain tissue samples for further evaluation.
