What Is Liposuction And What To Expect?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery designed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body to improve its contour and shape. This procedure is typically used for areas where fat tends to be more resistant to diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, thighs, flanks, arms, and under the chin. The surgeon makes small incisions through which a thin tube, or cannula, is inserted. The cannula is connected to a suction device, which removes unwanted fat. While liposuction is an effective body-contouring technique, it is not intended for weight loss, but rather to target localized fat deposits that do not respond well to exercise or diet.

During the procedure, clients are usually under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the treatment. The surgery typically lasts 1 to 3 hours, depending on the areas being treated. After the procedure, clients can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the treated areas, which generally resolves in a few days. Full recovery takes about 6 to 8 weeks, during which time swelling subsides and the body contours become more defined. Results are generally long-lasting as long as the client maintains a healthy lifestyle, though weight fluctuations may affect the results over time.
