Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. In this condition, the pancreas makes little or no insulin, which is the hormone that allows the body to use glucose for energy. Risk factors for getting type 1 diabetes are family history, genetics, and age.
