What Do Women's Health Doctors Do?

A women’s health doctor, or Gynecologist, is the professional women see about women’s health matters. The professional can screen for and help to prevent common and serious women’s health issues, and provide ongoing support for a woman.
Some of the services a gynecologist can provide include complete well-woman exams which can check for signs of issues like breast cancer. Services like pap smears, ultrasounds, advice about intimate health matters, reproductive matters, and contraception, can be provided by a gynecologist.
At the age of 20, or when a woman becomes sexually active, it’s important to go see a gynecologist annually. It might be important to see one in other circumstances, like when a woman experiences:
- Urinary incontinence
- Other issues related to her bladder
- Menopause
- Changes to her menstrual cycle/period frequency
- Menstruation that’s irregular or even painful
- Ovarian cysts
- Discomfort/pain in the vaginal area
- Bleeding that isn’t normal
- Bleeding that happens during or after intercourse.
