How Are Pituitary Disorders Diagnosed?
Diagnosing pituitary disorders often involves a multi-step approach. First, your doctor will discuss your medical history and symptoms in detail. They will also inquire about family history, as some pituitary disorders can be hereditary. A physical exam will check for signs of hormonal imbalances, such as vision changes, growth abnormalities, or milk production in women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
Following the initial evaluation, blood tests become crucial for diagnosis. These tests measure the levels of various hormones produced by the pituitary gland and other organs that regulate hormone production. Abnormal hormone levels can indicate a pituitary disorder. Imaging tests like MRI scans may be used to visualize the pituitary gland and check for abnormalities in size or structure. In some cases, additional tests specific to the suspected pituitary disorder, like dynamic function tests or vision tests, may be needed for a conclusive diagnosis.
