What Should I Expect after Wisdom Tooth Removal?
After wisdom tooth removal, you can expect some swelling, discomfort, and mild bleeding at the extraction site for the first few days. Pain management is typically handled with over-the-counter pain relievers or those prescribed by your dentist. Swelling can be minimized by applying ice packs to the outside of your face during the first 24 hours. It's important to follow your dentist's aftercare instructions, which may include rinsing with a saltwater solution, avoiding smoking or using straws, and eating soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes for the first few days.
As the extraction site heals, the pain and swelling should gradually subside. It's common to experience stiffness in the jaw, particularly if the teeth were impacted. Stitches, if used, will either dissolve on their own or be removed during a follow-up visit. Complete healing of the gum tissue may take a couple of weeks, and the bone around the extraction site may continue to heal for several months. It's crucial to maintain good oral hygiene during recovery, being careful to avoid disturbing the surgical area.
