What Are the Causes of Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain is caused by inflammation or dysfunction in the sacroiliac joints, which connect the lower spine to the pelvis. Common causes include trauma, such as falls or car accidents, which can damage the ligaments or cartilage in the SI joints. Repetitive stress from activities that involve heavy lifting or prolonged standing can also lead to SI joint pain by straining the joint structures.

Inflammatory conditions, such as Ankylosing spondylitis or other forms of Arthritis, can cause chronic inflammation in the SI joints, leading to pain and stiffness. Pregnancy is another common cause of SI joint pain, as hormonal changes and increased weight can loosen the ligaments supporting the pelvis, resulting in joint instability. Degenerative changes, such as those seen with aging, can also contribute to SI joint dysfunction and pain. Proper diagnosis and treatment, including physical therapy, medications, and in some cases, injections or surgery, are essential for managing SI joint pain effectively.
