When Should I Seek Medical Help for Shoulder Pain?

You should call us for an appointment if you have a significant injury to your shoulder, with symptoms that last more than a few weeks, or if you lose the ability to raise your arm above chest level because you may have torn your rotator cuff or labral cartilage. If you have suffered a shoulder dislocation, even if it’s back in place and not particularly painful now, there’s still a better than 90% probability that you have torn a significant structure, and 80% probability that it will dislocate again unless that structure is repaired.

If you experience pain when you try to use your arm out away from your body which has gotten progressively worse over time, you should call us for an appointment since this may be a sign of a small rotator cuff tear getting bigger. Your body has an amazing capacity to heal most knee and shoulder injuries within 4 to 6 weeks. However, if your symptoms have continued beyond that and are causing significant trouble for you, you may have a problem which cannot heal on its own. Our 25 years of experience taking care of shoulder problems in athletes allows us to repair almost all shoulder problems with just an outpatient arthroscopic procedure, through a few tiny incisions. Our repair techniques are strong, enough typically to allow gentle use of the arm right away, without the bulky straps and braces. We would be happy to help get you back to the things you want to do, as we have with so many others. Feel free to set up an appointment.
