What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and Root Planing is a deep cleaning procedure designed to treat gum disease and prevent further Oral Health issues. This non-surgical treatment removes plaque and tartar buildup below the gumline, targeting bacteria that cause inflammation and infection. It is often recommended for individuals with gingivitis or early-stage periodontitis to help restore gum health and prevent tooth loss.

During the procedure, a Dentist or Hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar (scaling) from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gums. Root Planing then smooths the tooth roots, helping the gums reattach to the teeth while reducing future bacterial buildup. Local anesthesia may be used to ensure comfort, as the cleaning reaches deep areas that regular brushing and flossing cannot address. After the procedure, mild sensitivity or discomfort is common but temporary. Proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, is essential to maintain results and prevent gum disease from progressing.

Scaling and Root planing is an effective way to improve Oral Health and prevent more serious Dental issues. If you experience bleeding gums, bad breath, or gum recession, consulting with a dentist can determine whether this treatment is right for you.
