What Are Peripheral Joint Injections?

Peripheral joint injections are used to treat a variety of painful conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout. The injections are administered by a doctor or pain management specialist, and are typically given in the arm, hand, lower leg or foot. They are usually administered to decrease pain and help with inflammation in the joints.

Peripheral joints is a term used to refer to any joint outside of the torso, or on the periphery, including the ankles, feet, toes, elbows, fingers, wrists, hips, knees and shoulders. When irritated or inflamed because of an injury or arthritis, even the smallest joints can feel significant pain.
