What Are Facet Joint Disorders?
Facet joints are tiny joints located behind the vertebrae in your spine. They connect the vertebrae and provide flexibility and stability during movements like bending, twisting, and walking. Facet joint disorders arise when these joints become inflamed or irritated. This irritation can stem from various factors such as osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, or injuries to the spine from accidents or overuse.
The inflammation associated with facet joint disorders can cause significant pain in the back and even radiate to the buttocks and legs. The pain often worsens with certain movements and activities that put stress on the facet joints, such as standing for extended periods, bending over, or twisting. Facet joint disorders are a relatively common cause of back pain, particularly in the lower back (lumbar spine). Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to manage pain, improve mobility, and prevent further complications.
