What Is Interstim Therapy?
Interstim therapy is a type of neuromodulation treatment used to manage overactive bladder, urinary retention, and fecal incontinence. The therapy involves the use of a small implantable device that sends mild electrical pulses to the sacral nerves, which are responsible for bladder and bowel function. These electrical pulses help regulate nerve signals and improve symptoms by restoring normal communication between the brain and the bladder or bowel.
The procedure is typically performed in two stages. The first stage is a test phase where a temporary device is implanted to determine if the therapy effectively alleviates symptoms. If the test phase is successful, a permanent device is implanted in the second stage. Patients can control the device using an external programmer, adjusting the stimulation as needed. Interstim therapy is minimally invasive and can significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with refractory urinary or bowel control problems.
It can be an effective treatment option for individuals who have not found relief through other methods. It is also a relatively low-risk procedure with minimal complications.
