What Are the Different Types of Pink Eye Treatment Available?

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is inflammation of the conjunctiva, which can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants. The treatment for pink eye depends on the underlying cause. For bacterial conjunctivitis, doctors usually prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointments to treat the infection and prevent it from spreading. These medications typically work within a few days, and it's important to complete the full course of treatment to avoid recurrence.

In the case of viral conjunctivitis, often linked to a cold or flu, the infection generally resolves on its own within one to two weeks. Supportive care, including cold compresses and artificial tears, can help relieve discomfort. Allergic conjunctivitis is treated with antihistamine eye drops, decongestants, and sometimes steroid drops to reduce inflammation. Avoiding allergens is also important. For irritant-induced pink eye, such as from smoke or chemicals, saline rinses and lubricating eye drops can help soothe the eyes. Proper hygiene, like frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with contaminated objects, is crucial to prevent the spread of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis.
