What Is Included in a Wellness Checkup?

A wellness checkup, also known as a preventive health exam or annual physical, includes a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's overall health to detect potential health issues and promote preventive care. During the checkup, the healthcare provider will review the patient's medical history, including any chronic conditions, medications, and family history of diseases. A physical examination is conducted to assess vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate, as well as height and weight measurements to calculate body mass index (BMI).

The checkup may also include screenings for various health conditions, such as cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, and cancer screenings (e.g., mammograms, Pap smears, or colonoscopies) based on age, gender, and risk factors. Immunizations may be updated, and the healthcare provider may offer counseling on lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, smoking cessation, and stress management. The goal of a wellness checkup is to identify and address health issues early, promote healthy behaviors, and maintain overall well-being.
