What Do DOT Physicals Typically Include?
DOT Physicals involve a thorough evaluation of a driver’s overall health and ability to perform job-related tasks safely. The exam usually begins with a review of medical history, including past illnesses, surgeries, and any ongoing conditions. The healthcare provider then performs a physical assessment that includes checking blood pressure, heart rate, vision, hearing, and general physical condition. A urine sample is also commonly collected to help identify underlying health concerns such as metabolic or kidney-related issues. In addition to these checks, the examiner evaluates neurological function, coordination, and mobility to ensure the driver can manage the physical demands of operating a commercial vehicle. Vision and hearing tests are especially important, as drivers must be able to detect hazards and respond quickly. Based on the findings, the provider determines whether the driver meets the required health standards. If all criteria are met, a medical certificate is issued to confirm eligibility.
