How Often Do DOT Physicals Need to Be Renewed?

DOT physicals must be renewed every Two years for most commercial drivers. However, the frequency of renewal can vary depending on the driver's health and any medical conditions that may be present. If a driver has a medical condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease, they may be required to undergo more frequent exams to monitor their condition and ensure that it does not impair their ability to drive safely. For example, drivers with well-controlled diabetes may be required to renew their DOT physical annually if they need ongoing monitoring.

In cases where a driver is found to have medical conditions that might impair their ability to drive, the DOT examiner may issue a temporary medical certificate, which is typically valid for 3 to 6 months. During this time, the driver may be required to provide additional documentation or medical evaluations before receiving a longer-term certificate. The goal of renewing DOT physicals is to ensure that drivers maintain their physical health and meet the DOT’s health standards throughout their career, reducing the risk of accidents caused by health issues on the road.
