What Is an MRI?

An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is an electronic scan that can accurately diagnose diseases. An MRI scan provides medical professionals with clear images of the organs and structures of your body without any invasive treatments needed. An MRI is also painless and takes approximately 15 to 90 minutes to complete the scan depending on the area being examined and how many images are being taken. There are two types of MRI’s, closed MRI and an open MRI. With a closed MRI the patient will lie on a narrow table inside a tube-like structure and the scanner will conduct the images. A closed MRI will give the most accurate results as it has many more scanners inside the machine then an open MRI. In an open MRI you only have imaging magnets on the top and bottom of your body and the rest of your body is in the open. Some people get claustrophobia from closed MRIs as the space is very confined and so the open MRI is an option for those who may need to use it.
