What Is a Dexa Scan?
A Dexa scan, also known as dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, is a medical imaging test used primarily to measure bone density. This scan helps diagnose conditions like osteoporosis by assessing the strength and density of bones, particularly in the hip, spine, and sometimes the forearm. It uses two different X-ray beams to create detailed images of the bones, allowing healthcare providers to calculate bone mineral density (BMD) accurately. The Dexa scan is a quick, non-invasive, and painless procedure, usually taking about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.
During a Dexa scan, the patient lies still on a table while the scanner passes over the body. The test results are reported as a T-score, which compares the patient's bone density to that of a healthy young adult, and a Z-score, which compares it to people of the same age, gender, and size. These scores help determine the severity of bone loss, assess fracture risk, and monitor changes in bone density over time. Dexa scans are particularly important for postmenopausal women, older adults, and individuals with risk factors for osteoporosis, enabling timely intervention and treatment to prevent fractures and maintain bone health.
