How Long Does an Echocardiogram Take to Complete?
The duration of an echocardiogram generally depends on the type of test being performed and the complexity of the case, but most procedures take between 30 to 60 minutes. A standard transthoracic echocardiogram, which is the most commonly performed type, typically lasts about 30 minutes. During this test, the patient will be asked to lie on an examination table while a technician uses a transducer to capture images of the heart. For more detailed assessments or if additional views are needed, the procedure may take longer.
In some cases, a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) may be performed, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. This type of echocardiogram involves inserting a specialized probe into the esophagus to obtain clearer images of the heart, especially in patients with conditions that are difficult to visualize through a transthoracic echocardiogram. Regardless of the type, an echocardiogram is a relatively quick procedure that provides valuable information to assess heart health and guide treatment decisions. After the test, most patients can resume their normal activities immediately.
