What Are the Different Types of Chemical Peels Available?
Chemical peels are categorized into 3 main types: superficial, medium, and deep peels. Superficial peels are the mildest and involve the application of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) to exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. These peels are typically used for minor skin issues such as dry skin, mild acne, or sunspots. Superficial peels require minimal downtime, and results are often subtle, with clients experiencing a brighter, more even complexion.
Medium-depth peels, such as those using trichloroacetic acid (TCA), penetrate deeper into the skin and are often used for more noticeable imperfections, including moderate acne scarring, age spots, and fine lines. Recovery time for medium peels can take several days, with some peeling and redness during the healing process. Deep peels, such as phenol peels, are the most intense and are used for more severe skin concerns, including deep wrinkles, severe scarring, and extensive sun damage. These peels require longer recovery time and are typically performed under anesthesia. Each type of chemical peel is suited for different skin concerns and goals.
