How Long Is the Recovery Time for Fibroid Treatments at a Fibroid Center?

The recovery time after treatment for fibroids varies depending on the type of procedure performed. For minimally invasive treatments such as uterine artery embolization (UAE) or MRI-guided focused ultrasound, recovery is typically quicker. Most women can return to their normal activities within a few days to a week. UAE, for example, involves only a small incision in the groin area and usually requires an overnight hospital stay, followed by a few days of rest before returning to daily activities. This procedure allows for a quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery, with most women experiencing only mild discomfort during the healing process.

On the other hand, recovery after myomectomy, whether laparoscopic or open surgery, can take longer. Women undergoing a laparoscopic myomectomy may need about 1 to 2 weeks to return to light activities, with full recovery taking up to 4 to 6 weeks. In cases of hysterectomy (the complete removal of the uterus), which may be considered for large or symptomatic fibroids, the recovery period can extend from 6 to 8 weeks, with patients needing to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity. A Fibroid Center will provide guidance on what to expect during the recovery process, including follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure optimal outcomes.
