How Long Does Lower Back Pain Last?

The duration of lower back pain can vary widely depending on the underlying cause, severity, and treatment approach. Generally, lower back pain is classified as either acute, subacute, or chronic based on how long it persists. Acute lower back pain lasts less than 4 weeks and is often the result of muscle strain, ligament sprain, or minor injuries caused by activities like lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or poor posture. With proper care, such as rest, gentle stretching, and applying ice or heat, most cases of acute lower back pain resolve within a few days to a couple of weeks. For many individuals, returning to light activities and avoiding prolonged rest helps promote recovery and prevent stiffness.

On the other hand, chronic lower back pain persists for 12 weeks or longer, even after the initial injury or condition has been treated. Chronic pain is often associated with underlying conditions such as degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or arthritis. While it may wax and wane, chronic pain can significantly impact daily life and may require a more comprehensive approach, including physical therapy, lifestyle changes, or interventional treatments like injections. In some cases, lower back pain falls into a subacute category, lasting between 4 and 12 weeks, and may represent an intermediate stage where the pain is improving but not fully resolved.
