Who Is at High Risk for Influenza?

Certain groups of people are at a higher risk of developing severe complications from Influenza. These high-risk groups include the elderly (typically those aged 65 and older), young children (especially those under 2 years old), pregnant women, and individuals with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems. Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities are also considered high-risk due to their close living quarters and potentially compromised health.

In addition, healthcare workers and caregivers who are frequently exposed to the flu virus are at higher risk, not only of contracting the flu themselves but also of spreading it to vulnerable populations. It's crucial for individuals in these high-risk groups to get the annual flu vaccine, as it can significantly reduce the likelihood of severe illness, hospitalization, and death. Early treatment with antiviral medications is also recommended for high-risk individuals who develop flu symptoms.
