How Do Allergies Contribute to Eye Infections?

Allergies are a common cause of Eye discomfort and can contribute to the development of eye infections, particularly allergic conjunctivitis. When the body is exposed to allergens like pollen, pet dander, or dust mites, the immune system overreacts, releasing histamines that cause inflammation in the eyes. This inflammation leads to redness, swelling, itching, and watery eyes, which can make the eyes more susceptible to infection. Additionally, the constant rubbing or touching of the eyes due to irritation increases the risk of introducing bacteria and other pathogens into the eyes, potentially causing a secondary bacterial infection.

Allergic Reactions can also lead to excessive tear production, which may flush away some irritants but can create a moist environment that fosters bacterial growth. In individuals who wear contact lenses, the risk of infection is even higher as the lenses can trap allergens and bacteria close to the eye surface. Managing allergies with antihistamines or avoiding allergens, along with proper eye hygiene, can help prevent eye infections associated with allergies.
