What Is Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)?
Sublingual Immunotherapy, commonly known as SLIT, is an allergy treatment approach designed to help the immune system become less sensitive to specific allergens over time. It works by placing small, measured doses of an allergen under the tongue, where it is absorbed through the oral tissues. This repeated exposure helps the immune system gradually adapt, reducing its overreaction to substances such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. SLIT is typically used as a long-term management option for allergic conditions rather than for immediate symptom relief.
SLIT is often considered an alternative to traditional allergy shots and is usually administered at home after an initial evaluation and guidance from a healthcare provider. Treatment plans are individualized based on a person’s allergy profile and sensitivity levels. Over time, SLIT may help reduce the severity of allergy symptoms and improve overall quality of life by addressing the underlying immune response. Because it involves regular dosing over an extended period, consistency and follow-up are important parts of the SLIT process, with progress monitored through ongoing clinical assessments.
