What Are the Symptoms of Hand Arthritis?
Hand arthritis is characterized by several symptoms that can affect daily activities and quality of life. Common symptoms include pain and tenderness in the joints, particularly during or after movement. Stiffness in the hands, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity, is also typical. Swelling and warmth around the affected joints can indicate inflammation, and over time, the joints may appear larger or more knobby due to bone changes.
Other symptoms include decreased range of motion, making it difficult to perform tasks such as gripping objects or making a fist. In advanced stages, hand arthritis can lead to joint deformities, such as crooked fingers, and the development of bony spurs or nodules. Patients may also experience a grinding or clicking sensation in the joints, known as crepitus, due to the roughening of joint surfaces. Early detection and treatment are essential to manage symptoms and maintain hand function.
