How Is a Flu-like Illness Different from the Flu?

Feeling under the weather with a Fever, Cough, and Fatigue? It might be the flu, but it could also be a flu-like illness. While the symptoms can be similar, there are key distinctions between these two conditions.

The culprit behind the flu is a specific influenza virus. This virus comes on abruptly, often with a high fever, chills, and muscle aches. The flu can be quite debilitating and leave you feeling miserable for a week or more. Yearly flu vaccinations target the most prevalent influenza strains, offering some protection against getting the flu or reducing its severity.

Flu-like illnesses, on the other hand, can be caused by various viruses or even bacteria. Common cold viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or even adenovirus can cause flu-like symptoms. These illnesses tend to develop more gradually and may not be as severe as the flu. There isn't a single vaccine to prevent all flu-like illnesses, but a healthy lifestyle with good hygiene practices can help reduce your risk of catching them.
