How Do Doctors Diagnose Ear Infections?

To diagnose an Ear Infection, a doctor will typically begin by taking a detailed medical history, asking about symptoms such as ear pain, hearing loss, or drainage from the ear. The doctor will also inquire about any recent upper respiratory infections or allergies that may have contributed to the ear infection. A physical exam is then performed, during which the doctor will use an instrument called an otoscope to examine the inside of the ear for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or fluid buildup behind the eardrum.

If necessary, additional Tests may be done to confirm the diagnosis or determine the severity of the infection. For example, if a doctor suspects a middle ear infection, they may test for fluid behind the eardrum using a tympanogram. In cases of recurrent or chronic ear infections, the doctor may refer the patient to an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist for further evaluation. The specialist may perform hearing tests, imaging studies, or even take a sample of the ear fluid to identify the cause of the infection and recommend appropriate treatment.
