What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a Chronic non-communicable disease of the brain that affects around 50 million people worldwide. It is characterized by recurrent seizures, which are brief episodes of involuntary movement that may involve a part of the body (partial) or the entire body (generalized) and are sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness and control of bowel or bladder function.

Seizure episodes are a result of excessive electrical discharges in a group of brain cells. Different parts of the brain can be the site of such discharges. Seizures can vary from the briefest lapses of attention or muscle jerks to severe and prolonged convulsions. Seizures can also vary in frequency, from less than one per year to several per day.

Characteristics of seizures vary and depend on where in the brain the disturbance first starts, and how far it spreads. Temporary symptoms occur, such as loss of awareness or consciousness, and disturbances of movement, sensation (including vision, hearing and taste), mood, or other cognitive functions. People with epilepsy tend to have more physical problems (such as fractures and bruising from injuries related to seizures), as well as higher rates of psychological conditions, including anxiety and depression.

Mens Health Awareness Month: How Do I Improve My Health?

Men face a higher risk of death from several chronic and serious diseases. Heart disease is a leading cause of death among men, with nearly 350,000 men succumbing to cardiovascular disease annually. Additionally, men have a higher cancer rate compared to women. Mental health also poses a significant threat, as men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women.

There are simple ways to address common issues. There are options available to you, such as:

  • Routine health screenings and doctor appointments: Regular preventative health screenings can help identify signs of serious illness before they become deadly. For example, early detection of prostate cancer can greatly improve chances for recovery. Regular check ups can also develop relationships with doctors and improve awareness of warning signs.
  • Lifestyle choices: Guard your health against serious health conditions with everyday activities like:
    • Eating a healthy diet.
    • Exercising.
    • Getting enough sleep.
    • Drinking alcohol in moderation.
  • Mental health support: Men often fear judgment when facing mental health challenges. Encourage the men in your life to seek help for issues if you think something is wrong or troubling them. Remember: you are not alone, and help is available.
