A Primary Care Physician (PCP), also known as a primary care provider, is your first point of contact for most non-emergency healthcare needs. They act as your guide in the world of medicine, overseeing your overall health and building a relationship with you over time. PCPs can be medical doctors (MDs) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), but nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) can also function as PCPs in some cases.
Your PCP is your partner in maintaining your well-being. They provide a variety of services, including annual checkups, preventive screenings, and immunizations. They can also diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries, manage chronic conditions, and prescribe medications. If you need to see a specialist for a more complex health issue, your PCP will refer you to the appropriate one.
