How Often Do DOT Physicals Need to Be Renewed?

DOT Physicals must be renewed every two years for most commercial drivers. However, the frequency of renewal can vary depending on the driver's health and any medical conditions that may be present. If a driver has a medical condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease, they may be required to undergo more frequent exams to monitor their condition and ensure that it does not impair their ability to drive safely. For example, drivers with well-controlled diabetes may be required to renew their DOT physical annually if they need ongoing monitoring.

In cases where a Driver is found to have medical conditions that might impair their ability to drive, the DOT examiner may issue a temporary medical certificate, which is typically valid for 3 to 6 months. During this time, the driver may be required to provide additional documentation or medical evaluations before receiving a longer-term certificate. The goal of renewing DOT physicals is to ensure that drivers maintain their physical health and meet the DOT's health standards throughout their career, reducing the risk of accidents caused by health issues on the road.

What Age Should Children Start Getting School Physicals?

Children typically start getting school physicals when they enter kindergarten or preschool, around the ages of 4 to 5 years old. This initial physical is an important milestone in your child's healthcare journey, as it ensures they are ready to begin school both physically and developmentally. At this age, the school physical includes a comprehensive review of your child's medical history, a physical examination, and updates to any required immunizations. It's an opportunity for healthcare providers to assess your child's growth and development and to identify any potential issues that could affect their school experience.

After the initial school physical, it's recommended that children continue to have annual physicals throughout their school years. These annual exams help monitor your child's ongoing growth, development, and overall health. Regular school physicals provide a consistent check-in point for healthcare providers to ensure that your child remains healthy and able to participate fully in school activities. Starting school physicals at an early age establishes a foundation for good health and sets the stage for a successful educational journey.
