When Should My Child See a Doctor for Injuries or Wounds?

If your child has experienced a wound or injury, they should see a doctor if you notice or experience any of the following:

Symptoms do not improve after rest and at-home care.
Inability to stand, walk, or move the affected joint.
Difficulty stopping a wound from bleeding.
Pain that disrupts sleep or routine activities.
Visible deformities in the injured area.
Cut that is more than a quarter of an inch deep or continues to bleed after 15 minutes of gentle pressure.
Signs of infection, including pus, red streaks running away from the wound, or a fever.

Which Types of Sports Injuries Are the Most Common?

There are many types of injuries that can be sustained by children and adults who are involved in organized sports and exercise training. Soft tissue injuries can include pulled muscles or strained tendons and ligaments, while hard tissue injuries include bone fractures and tooth injuries. Overuse injuries are very common not only in athletes, but also in adults with physically demanding jobs such as construction workers and warehouse employees. Head and neck injuries can include sprains and strains, but there are more severe injuries such as those to the spinal cord or brain. Concussions should always be carefully evaluated by a doctor to ensure further brain damage does not occur.
