Dental Implants are a highly effective and long-lasting solution for replacing Missing Teeth, but not everyone is an immediate candidate for the procedure. The ideal candidate for dental implants should have good overall oral health, sufficient jawbone density to support the implant and healthy gums free from active periodontal disease. Since Dental Implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, a strong and stable foundation is essential to ensure the implant integrates properly with the bone in a process called osseointegration. Individuals with significant bone loss due to prolonged tooth loss or untreated gum disease may require bone grafting to enhance the bone structure before receiving implants. Additionally, patients with uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or those undergoing radiation therapy in the head or neck region may require additional evaluation, as these conditions can affect healing and implant success rates.
Lifestyle factors also play a role in determining candidacy for Dental Implants. Heavy smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and poor oral hygiene can negatively impact healing and increase the risk of implant failure. Smokers, in particular, have a higher risk of complications because smoking reduces blood flow to the gums and can slow down the healing process. However, even those who are initially deemed unsuitable for dental implants may still become candidates after undergoing preliminary treatments such as bone grafting, gum disease management or lifestyle modifications.
Healing from a root canal procedure typically occurs within a few days to a week. During this period, patients may experience mild to moderate discomfort, including sensitivity, swelling, or soreness in the treated area. These symptoms are a normal part of the body's healing process as inflammation subsides and surrounding tissues begin to recover. It's also common to feel slight pressure when biting down during the initial days. Most of this discomfort gradually lessens and resolves without the need for further intervention, especially when patients follow proper post-procedure care instructions.
Although the majority of patients feel back to normal within a week, full healing of the internal tooth structure can take longer, even after symptoms have subsided. The treated tooth is often restored with a crown or filling to protect it from further damage and to restore function. If pain persists beyond a week or worsens, or if swelling increases, it's important to contact your dentist to rule out infection or complications. With good oral hygiene and follow-up care, root canal-treated teeth can remain healthy and functional for many years.
