What Are the Common Treatments for Spinal Disc Herniations?

Spinal disc herniations are commonly treated using a combination of conservative and, in some cases, surgical approaches. Initial treatment often involves rest and avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms, coupled with over-the-counter pain medications and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce pain and inflammation. Physical therapy is another cornerstone of treatment, focusing on exercises that strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, improve flexibility, and reduce pressure on the affected disc.

For patients who do not respond to conservative treatments, more advanced interventions may be necessary. Epidural steroid injections can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain in the short term. If symptoms persist or worsen, surgical options such as microdiscectomy or laminectomy may be considered. These procedures involve removing part of the herniated disc or surrounding bone to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves. Surgery is typically reserved for cases where there is significant nerve compression, causing severe pain, weakness, or loss of function.
