Substance abuse is a chemical dependency which is a continued pattern of an individual using a substance like drugs or alcohol that is causing significant problems or even distress. You may end up missing work or school, and using your preferred substance choice in dangerous situations, including driving a car or taking care of children. This can end up leading to issues with law enforcement, and interfere with family relationships, friendships, or both.
