What Is Sacroiliac Joint Pain?

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Pain refers to discomfort originating from the sacroiliac joints, which are located at the base of the spine, where the sacrum (the triangular bone at the bottom of the spine) meets the iliac bones of the pelvis. These joints are essential for connecting the spine to the lower body and play a vital role in transmitting forces between the upper and lower body during movement. SI joint pain can be caused by inflammation, injury, or degeneration of these joints, leading to discomfort in the lower back, hips, and buttocks. It may also be linked to conditions like arthritis or pregnancy, which can increase stress on the SI joints.

The pain can be sharp or dull and may worsen with certain movements such as standing up, climbing stairs, or bending forward. Some individuals experience difficulty sitting for extended periods, as the pressure on the sacroiliac joints intensifies. In many cases, SI joint pain is often misdiagnosed because it shares symptoms with other conditions like sciatica or hip problems. Treatment options typically include physical therapy, medications for pain and inflammation, joint injections, and in more severe cases, surgery. Proper diagnosis is essential for effective management and relief from SI joint pain.
