What Is Low Back Pain?

Low back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide, affecting individuals of all ages. It refers to discomfort, pain, or stiffness in the lower portion of the spine, often originating from muscles, ligaments, or vertebrae in the lumbar region. This condition can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that can interfere with daily activities and work. The causes of low back pain are varied and can include poor posture, muscle strain, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. Additionally, poor lifting techniques, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles are factors that can contribute to the development of low back pain.

Acute low back pain typically resolves within a few days to weeks, but for some individuals, the pain may become chronic, lasting for three months or longer. Chronic low back pain may be associated with underlying conditions such as osteoarthritis, scoliosis, or muscle imbalances. While the pain may be localized, it can also radiate to the legs, a condition known as sciatica. The management of low back pain often involves a combination of treatments such as physical therapy, exercise, posture correction, and in some cases, pain management techniques. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. Prevention of low back pain includes maintaining good posture, staying physically active, and practicing safe lifting techniques to minimize strain on the spine.
