What Is Lactose Intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is a common Condition where the body cannot fully digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens when there is not enough lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose in the small intestine. As a result, consuming dairy products can lead to digestive discomfort, including bloating, diarrhea, gas, and stomach cramps. These symptoms usually appear 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating or drinking dairy and can vary in severity depending on the amount of lactose consumed and the individual’s sensitivity.

Lactose intolerance can develop at any age, but is more common in adults. While the condition is not curable, it can be managed effectively by limiting or avoiding dairy products. Many people with lactose intolerance find they can tolerate small amounts of dairy or choose lactose-free alternatives like almond, soy, or oat milk.
