What Should You Expect in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Sessions?

DBT sessions are highly structured and combine both individual and group therapy components. In individual sessions, clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist to address specific goals, apply DBT skills to real-life situations, and receive support for ongoing challenges. The therapist provides validation and encouragement while also helping clients develop and practice new strategies for coping with difficult emotions and situations. Between sessions, clients may have access to phone coaching for support during crises or when applying skills in daily life.

Group skills training sessions are a key part of DBT and typically occur weekly. In these groups, participants learn and practice DBT's four core skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Sessions often involve interactive exercises, homework assignments, and group discussions to reinforce learning. Clients are encouraged to complete practice exercises outside of therapy, applying new skills to daily challenges. The combination of individual and group sessions provides comprehensive support, helping clients achieve greater emotional balance and improved relationships.
