Can You Exercise with a Joint Replacement?

Exercising almost immediately following a joint replacement surgery is not only safe but heavily encouraged to ensure that the joint can heal properly and restore function to the joint. However, each patient will be provided with several exercises and limitations to the speed or frequency that they can include in their exercises to ensure that the joint is healing properly without incurring new or more damage. Many of these exercises will include functional movement of the joint, with the exercises also being low impact and low loads for the joint. Initial exercises will be supervised by a physical therapist and will need to be continued daily with or without supervision, depending on what is recommended for each case. The physical therapist will make it very clear to the patient which movements are encouraged and recommended, and which movements should be avoided until the joint has fully healed, with great precautions being taken so as not to overwork or overstress the new joint.
