What Is a Gastrologist?

A Gastrologist, more commonly referred to as a Gastroenterologist, is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the digestive system. This includes the esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. Gastroenterologists are trained to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as endoscopies, colonoscopies, and liver biopsies to evaluate and manage conditions like GERD, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and liver disorders.

Patients are typically referred to a Gastroenterologist when they experience persistent digestive symptoms such as abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea or constipation, rectal bleeding, or jaundice. These specialists also manage chronic conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and hepatitis. Gastroenterologists work closely with other healthcare providers to develop comprehensive treatment plans that address the specific needs of each patient, ensuring optimal digestive health and overall well-being.
