What Causes Chronic Bronchitis?

Chronic bronchitis is primarily caused by long-term irritation and inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from the lungs. The most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking, as the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke damage the lining of the airways, leading to persistent inflammation. Even secondhand smoke can contribute to the development of this condition.

Other causes include prolonged exposure to environmental pollutants, such as dust, chemical fumes, or air pollution, which can irritate the lungs over time. Individuals working in environments with poor air quality are particularly at risk. Recurrent respiratory infections can also play a role in the development of chronic bronchitis, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems. While less common, genetic factors may predispose some individuals to chronic bronchitis. Preventing exposure to these irritants and quitting smoking are key steps in managing and preventing the progression of chronic bronchitis.
