What Are the Symptoms of Bug Bites and Stings?
Symptoms of bug bites and stings in children vary depending on the type of insect involved. Common symptoms include redness, swelling, itching, and pain at the site of the bite or sting. For most children, these symptoms are mild and resolve within a few hours to days. In some cases, children may develop hives, blisters, or a rash. Bug bites from mosquitoes, fleas, and bedbugs typically cause small, itchy bumps, while bee and wasp stings can result in more significant swelling and pain.
Severe reactions, such as anaphylaxis, can occur in some children who are allergic to insect venom. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, rapid pulse, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment with epinephrine and emergency medical care. To manage mild reactions, parents can apply cold compresses, topical antihistamines, or hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and swelling. Oral antihistamines may also be used to alleviate symptoms.
